Fremantle Ports maintains a comprehensive statistical database on trade activities in order to make decisions based on data and analysis.

Definitions

The international measure for standardising container throughput numbers is the TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit). A forty-foot long container is recorded as two TEUs, irrespective of height.

Empty containers are treated as a commodity category and recorded as weighing 2.0 mass tonnes per general TEU or 2.5 mass tonnes per refrigerated (reefer) TEU if no weight is given on the manifest.

Mass tonnes are used to measure the weight of goods, including packaging. When cargo is containerised, the tare weight of the container is excluded from the weight of the goods.
